Riley,

I know this is after the fact...

In Round Robin bidding the first bidder controls the bidding.  It's like 
Tic-Tac-Toe -- if you go first, and know how to play the game you can't 
lose.

To encourage high initial bids, you give the first bid in the round 
robin to the highest initial bidder and so on down the list.  If they 
are all closely bunched together, the first bidder would be wise to 
raise the initial bid in the round robin to put more distance between 
the initial bid and the rest of the pack.  Someone will surely top the 
high bid if it means going up only $500 or $1000.
